A deep deboss can make a hang tag feel more tactile and premium, but the final result depends on much more than the artwork alone.
Paper thickness, fibre composition, surface coating, logo design and press settings can all affect how clearly the impression appears.

What Is Deep Debossing?

Debossing presses a logo, text or graphic into the surface of the paper to create a recessed impression.
Unlike embossing, which raises the design above the paper surface, debossing creates depth below the surface.
The visual effect can range from subtle to pronounced depending on the material, artwork and production settings.

3 Factors That Affect the Depth of a Debossed Hang Tag

1. Paper Thickness and Fibre Composition

Thicker paper often provides more room for a visible recessed impression, but thickness alone does not determine the result.
The paper's fibre structure, density and surface treatment also matter.
Cotton-based papers and some uncoated specialty papers can respond well to debossing because the fibres compress more naturally under pressure.
Extra-thick paperboard can also create a stronger three-dimensional effect, depending on the board construction and artwork.
By comparison, thinner or heavily coated papers may produce a shallower impression and may require more careful testing.
For this reason, the paper should be selected together with the intended debossing effect rather than by GSM alone.

2. Artwork Size and Detail

The design itself has a major influence on the final result.
Large, simple logos usually allow more visible depth than very fine text or highly detailed graphics.
Before production, it is important to review:

  • Small text
  • Fine details
  • Distance between design elements
  • Position of the logo on the tag
If the artwork is too detailed, some areas may not deboss as clearly as expected.

3. Pressing Pressure and Production Control

A deeper impression usually requires stronger pressure, but too much pressure can damage the paper, distort the edges or affect the reverse side.
The correct settings depend on the paper, tag thickness, die design and artwork.
This is why sample testing is useful when a strong debossed effect is required.

Blind Debossing or Debossing With Printing?

A blind deboss uses only pressure, without foil or printed color.
This creates a clean, understated effect and is often suitable for minimalist branding.
A debossed logo can also be combined with printing or foil, but registration becomes more important because the printed or foiled area must align with the recessed impression.
If your design combines debossing with another finish, it is best to confirm the artwork and production sequence before making the sample.

Other Finishes That Can Be Combined With Debossing

Depending on the design, debossing can be combined with:
  • Foil stamping
  • Offset or Pantone color printing
  • Specialty paper
  • Metal eyelets
  • Cotton, waxed or polyester cords
The goal is not to use as many finishes as possible, but to choose materials and processes that work together.
